Teague holds off Mexia in crucial district contest

The once-winless Teague Lions slid up to third place in district and now post a 2-1 league record with a 26-21 victory against Mexia last Friday in Teague. With three regular-season games to go, head coach Zach Linscomb said he’s pleased that his team hasn’t peaked early and continues an upward trajectory as the Lions battle it out with Groesbeck, Fairfield and Mexia for the final three playoff spots. “Week in, week out, our kids are learning the plan and executing it,” head coach Zach Linscomb said. “We’re not thinking too much. We’re playing fast. And I think we’re playing our best football right now.” Stuck at the 41-yard line on a fourth down, the Lions’ sophomore quarterback Zak Leija found senior Caden Gonzales for a 6-0 home lead just over two minutes into play. The Lions’ defense kept the Black Cats to short, tight possessions as both J’Kybryen Harris and Tylin Randle nabbed two big picks in the first quarter. The Lions entered the danger zone once more, but their drive was stamped out by the Black Cats as junior Andres Venegas snagged a last-ditch interception at the three-yard line.
