State-ranked Malakoff holds off feisty Blackcats

The Mexia football team went toe-to-toe with state runner-up Malakoff and nearly pulled off a victory at Blackcat Field on Friday night.

Mexia overcame a 17-0 deficit with 14 fourth-quarter points, but the ‘Cats couldn’t capitalize on a third drive deep into Tiger territory and lost 17-14 to the No. 2-ranked Class 3A, Division I team in the state.

The loss left Mexia with a 1-2 record. Malakoff improved to 3-0.

Jarrell Wiley breathed life into Mexia’s offense when he burst 74 yards for a touchdown with 8 minutes, 57 seconds left in the game. Gustavo Martinez’ extra point pulled the Blackcats within 17-7.
