Lions prepare for district play

The Lions fell to Lake Belton and China Spring this past week in two close games.

This week, they will be finishing up their non-district games before starting district play next week.

On Tuesday night, the Lions hosted Lake Belton. In a back and forth first quarter of play, Teague pulled ahead to take a 17-15 lead into the second quarter. The Bronco scored 17 points and the Lions made 14 points in the second quarter Lake Belton took in a one point lead at halftime, 32-31.

The Lions came out in the third quarter and scored 14 points to the Broncos’ 12 points to take a one point lead into the final quarter of play, 45-44. Lake Belton scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and held Teague to 4 to take the victory, 54-49.

Jehmel Rice led the way for the Lions with 20 points. Nemier Herod added 11 points, Bryceson Black 6 points, Tylin Randle 4 points, Aidan Allen and Sabastian Carter 3 points each, and Gage Akin 2 points.

The Lions hosted China Spring on Friday night in what turned out to be a very low scoring game. China Spring took home a 24-17 win.

Teague led after the first quarter of play 8-5 and took a 12-10 lead at halftime. The Cougars scored 5 points and held Teague to 4 in the third quarter as the Lions took a one point lead into the final quarter of play 16-15. China Spring was able to put 9 points on the board in the fourth quarter as Teague only managed to make one free throw as the Cougars took home a 24-17 win.

Jehmel Rice led the way for Teague with 6 points. Jake Callahan added 5 points, Nemier Herod 4 points, and Xxavier Harvey 2 points.

“We have a young, inexperienced team, so consistent improvement is our first goal,” Coach Chris Hair said. “We would like to be able to play our best basketball as we get into district play and find a way into the playoffs.”

Teague lost seven seniors this past year. Top returners for the Lions include Nemier Herod, Wayland Allison, and Sabastian Carter.

Newcomers to watch on the court include Jehmel Rice, Bryceson Black, Tylin Randle, and Jake Callahan.

The Lions traveled to New Waverly on Tuesday night. They will host CrossRoads on Friday starting at 5pm and Mildred on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.. Teague will begin district play in Buffalo next Tuesday night.
