Lions’ 18-game losing streak ends with win in Groesbeck

It began Dec. 7, 2019. Two months later to the day, it ended. It was an 18-game losing streak by the Teague Lions basketball team. At the Groesbeck High Gym, in a 20-3A district contest, the Lions took down the host Groesbeck Goats decisively, 70-36. The win made the season record of Coach Chris Hair’s team 2-23. Their district record went to 1-8.

“This time our full effort came together. We had practiced well for some of our previous games, but then didn’t execute in the games what had worked well in practice. This time, we executed especially well on defense. That set up our offense for some easy shots,” Hair said. “I think we had our best game as far as turnovers go.”

The Lions committed only two turnovers to 13 for the Goats, and they outscored Groesbeck in each quarter.  It was 15-12 after the first quarter, 29-24 at the half and 45-32 after three periods.

Then the Lions blew the game wide open in the fourth as they recovered Groesbeck turnovers and scored at will. They added 25 more points to only four for Groesbeck. The 70 points represented a new season high for Teague. On Jan. 24, they had scored 51 points in a 79-51 loss to second-ranked Crockett.
