Lady Lions fall prey to Franklin

A flawed second quarter with no offensive execution proved to be fatal when Teague’s Varsity Lady Lions battled the visiting Franklin Lady Lions Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Freshmen Kori Pillette and Jolee Haley, juniors Alexis Dancer and Reagan Heggins, and senior Laura Knight led the battle against the Franklin Lady Lions. Joining the game later in the quarter, junior Takoria Jones managed to land a three-pointer for Teague. With help from her other teammates, Teague tallied 10 points in the first quarter. Franklin managed to put up 3 three-pointers and create a 6-point gap between their Lion counterparts with 16 points, 10-16. Teague’s struggles began in the second quarter as they were unable to land any shots from the field. They only added 8 points to the scoreboard thanks to made free throws by junior Ashlynn Forge and Jolee Haley. Franklin continued to dominate as they scored 3 additional three-pointers outscoring Teague by a dime, 18-34.

Returning with a new defensive strategy the Teague Lady Lions held Franklin to 7 points. Senior Mallory Steen landed 2 three-pointers in the third quarter, and sophomore Mollie Sims backed her up with a three-pointer as well. Performing better in the field Teague tallied 19 points in the third quarter in attempts to catch up with Franklin, 37-41.

Although Franklin began to slack in the field shots, they remained strong at the freethrow line gaining themselves an additional 19 points.

Teague’s sub-par field goal percentage in the second quarter proved fatal to the Teague Lions’ attempts to even the score. Forge and Haley scored a three-pointer each in the final quarter. Only adding 12 points to the board, Teague handed the victory to the Franklin Lady Lions, 49-60.

Point stats follow: Jolee Haley, 14 points; Reagan Heggins, 10 points; Ashlynn Forge, 8 points; Mallory Steen, 6 points; Takoria Jones, 5 points; Mollie Sims, 4 points; Alexis Dancer, 2 points.

The Varsity Girls will resume play on Saturday, Jan. 30 in Groesbeck at 1 p.m. They will face Elkhart Tuesday, Feb. 2 and Buffalo Thursday, Feb. 4 at 5 p.m..
