Goat Homecoming win features ground-game success
In a sense, the steps that Allen Lewis went through in being named Groesbeck’s No. 1 quarterback were like being in a three-act play which culminated with a 34-28 win over Eustace on homecoming night Friday at the Groesbeck field.
In the first act, which took place the week before, the freshman quarterback had his jersey number changed from 23 to 5 by Groesbeck coach Jerry Bomar, 5 being a proper number for a quarterback.
Lewis was replacing the injured Zach Wilson, who was lost for the season with a torn meniscus. In his first start, Lewis led Groesbeck to its first win of the year, a 22-19 decision at Marlin.
In the second act, with the entire scene set in the coach’s office at his desk, Bomar changed Lewis’s number to 1, reserving the No. 5 for another quarterback to wear should he need to call another one to step up for the Goats.
The third act was well-attended by a Homecoming crowd filling the seats on the Goat side of the field. They watched the freshman lead the Goats in a decisive offensive display on the ground especially, but enough through the air to move the season record to 2-2.
