Vicki Jo (Black) Becker

Vicki Jo (Black) Becker went to her heavenly home on Feb. 21, 2022, at the age of 74. Services were held at First United Methodist Church in Dew, on Friday, Feb. 25, with visitation at 1 p.m. and funeral services at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Duncan Graham and the Rev. Curtis Matthys officiating. Interment followed in the Dew Cemetery. Pallbearers were Chris Becker Jr., Jacob Hamill, Ryan Hamill, William Becker, Adrian Gutierrez, Richie Black and Dustin Lane.

Vicki was born to Purvis and Louise Black on April 26, 1947, in Teague, and spent her early years at Lanely, attended the school in Dew and then attended school in Teague. When in high school, her family moved to San Gabriel and she attended school in Thorndale. There she met her future husband, Paul Becker. They began dating in 1964 and were married on May 28, 1966. At the time of their marriage, she was working for a title company in Austin, and he was enrolled at Southwest Texas State College (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, and working part-time for Lone Star Gas and Round Rock Lime Company, in Round Rock. Their son, Chris, was born in San Marcos in 1968.

In 1969, they moved to College Station, where Paul entered graduate school at Texas A&M and Vicki took the position of secretary to the chair of the Meteorology Department. While in College Station, their daughter Lori was born in 1970. After Paul’s graduation in 1972, his work took the family to many locations to live throughout the next several decades, including locations in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alaska, Maryland and South Carolina. In 2020, Vicki and Paul returned home to Texas and settled in Fairfield.

Through the years, Vicki’s intelligence, organizational skills, hard work and integrity were much appreciated by various employers in diverse areas of work: retail, real estate, office management, insurance and medical transcription.

Vicki was always active in the church, participating in women’s church groups and always involved in Christian education. She taught Sunday school and summer Vacation Bible School in several different churches over the years.

Her family was everything to her. She had a loving and nurturing spirit. She took care of her family and her dogs. She loved camping and fishing, particularly when she lived in Alaska. She was very artistic. She was particularly interested in toll painting and crossstitch. She was very proud of her skills at the piano, a talent she passed on to several of her grandchildren. She loved to read and, like her mother, was an excellent cook.

Vicki leaves behind her cherished family: husband, Paul Becker; son, Chris Becker and wife Stephanie of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; and daughter, Lori Hamill and husband Rich of Summerville, S.C.; nine grandchildren, Chris Becker Jr, Jacob Hamill, Sarah Becker-Gutierrez, Mikaela Becker-Hoff, Ryan Hamill, William Becker, Ellie Hamill, Amanda Becker and Abby Hamill; and two great-grandchildren, Caleigh Becker and June Becker.

She is also survived by her brothers, Barry Black (wife Deborah) and Steve Black (wife Teresa); sisters, Janet Sustaire (husband David) and Susan Lane (husband Dennis); and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Purvis Black; her mother, Louise Black; and her sister, Cheryl Black.
