Thomas Richard (Tony) Salter, 78, of Fairfield passed away Monday, June 18, 2018 in Waco. Graveside services were held 1 p.m. Thursday, June 20 at Bonner Cemetery with the Reverend Terry Skinner officiating followed by Masonic graveside rites provided by Fairfield Lodge #103 A.M. & F.M. Capps Memorial Chapel was in charge of services. Salter was born Jan. 13, 1940 in Trinity to parents, Charlie Bruce Salter and Leona Lavert Hill Salter. He married Jane Bonner in August 1958 while both were seniors at Fairfield High School, lasting almost 60 years. Their favorite companions were Chihuahua dogs throughout their life. He held BS and M Ed. degrees in health and physical education and biology from Stephen F. Austin University. He retired in 2005 having taught at Linden- Kildare, Trinidad and Hillsboro school districts for over 40 years. Thirty- five of those years were with Hillsboro Independent School District. He also taught GED for 14 years, driver’s education and coached baseball, basketball and football for many years. Salter loved coaching high school sports, golf, fishing, movies and reading. One of his favorite activities was impersonating Elvis. He was a Master Mason with 40 years of service and a lifetime member and Past Master of Winkler Lodge #826 A.F. & A.M. as well as the Fairfield Lodge #103 A.F. & A.M. He was also a member of the Stewards Mill Harmony Community Church. In addition to his parents, his sister Bettye Charles Perez and brother John Bruce Salter preceded him in death. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Jane Bonner Salter of Fairfield; a sister, Nell (Bubba) Thompson of Houston; a brother, William (Bill) Salter and wife, Beverly of Georgetown; a brother-in-law, John Y Bonner Jr. and wife, Geri of Fairfield and several nieces and nephews.
