Funeral Services for Sara Bernana Sanders Washington took place Saturday, July 14 at 11 a.m. in the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church, Mexia. The reverend Byron Ravnell, pastor, officiated and Minister Gerry Ravnell, Minister of Music was the Eulogist. Interment was in the Woodland Cemetery, Mexia. Washington was born Feb. 2, 1924 in Limestone County to Frank Sanders, Jr. and Hortense Carroll. She went to be with the Lord July 9, 2018 in Mexia. Preceding her in death are her parents, Frank and Hortense Sanders; her husbands, James O. Rhodes and Merion Washington, Jr; her brothers, Floncel (Boy) Sanders and Charles Beil Sanders; her sisters, Christine (Kiddo) Bosworth, Jane L. (Nannie) Davis, Edwina (Aunt Baby) Fails, and Frankie (Yank) Brewer. She gave her life to Christ at an early age; her fellowship began with Sweet Home Baptist Church in Mexia, and attended New Friendship Baptist Church in Dallas until her passing. She attended Mexia’s Douglas and Dunbar Schools and graduated in 1940. Sara was 46-years-old when she attended El Centro College earning an associate’s degree as a dietitian. Left to cherish her beautiful memory are: her sister Hazel McWilliams of Alameda, Calif., her only child; Stephanie Rhodes (James Q) Smith, her grandsons; Demosthenes (Dickey) of Mexia, and Desmond (La- Tracy) Washington of Lancaster; her great-grandchildren, Ashley (Aaron) Bibbs of Springs; Emmalee West of Mexia; Kaleb and Kalen Washington and KenDarrius Askew, of Lancaster; Delano and DeMeon (Loretta, Logan) Washington of Dallas, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends.
