ROBERT M. SCHMIDT

Robert M. Schmidt, 76, of Fairfield, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2021, in Fairfield. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at Woodland Cemetery near Kirvin with Mr. Kody Franklin officiating. There will be a visitation from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, May 6, at Capps Memorial Chapel prior to the graveside service.

Mr. Schmidt was born Jan. 15, 1945, in Philadelphia, Penn., to parents Andrew Jacob and Margaret Kay Smith Schmidt. He served in the United States Navy from 1962-1966 as an Aviation Boatswains Mate Aircraft Handler. He married Delilah Ann Herrington on Jan. 30, 1965, in Corpus Christi, and she preceded him in death Aug. 16, 2011. He first moved to Freestone County in 2000 but relocated to Cypress, with his granddaughter following his wife’s death. He was a retired welder with AMOCO, later BP Oil Co., and was later employed by the City of Fairfield in maintenance. He was known around Fairfield as a very good handyman.

In addition to his wife and parents he was also preceded in death by a sister, Irene.

Left to cherish his memory is a son, Robert Schmidt Jr.; a brother, Michael Schmidt and wife Tammy of Pennsylvania; one sister, Margery James of New Jersey; three grandchildren, Jessica Franklin and husband Kody of Cypress, Andrew Schmidt and wife Margaret of Grand Prairie, and Brittney Schmidt of Fairfield. He is also survived by the “light of his life,” a great-granddaughter, Ivy Franklin.
