RALPH L. ‘POP’ HAZEN SR.

Funeral services for Ralph L. “Pop” Hazen Sr., 84, were held at noon Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague. Pastor Randy Strange officiated. Interment followed the services at Birdston Cemetery near Streetman.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with the family present at the funeral home.

Mr. Hazen passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022, in New Albany, Ind., while visiting family.

He was born in New Albany, Ind., on Dec. 23, 1937, and grew up there. He entered the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Fort Hood, and also spent time in Germany. After his service he returned to his home state, Indiana, but later moved back to Texas where he remained. He spent his last 12 years near Teague.

Mr. Hazen was a “Jack-of-all-trades.” He worked as a welder most of his life, but also worked in other areas of construction and in security. “Pop,” as he was known, enjoyed fishing and loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by eight children, Connie Doan and husband Danny of Palmyra, Ind., Janie Hayes of Greenville, Ind., De-Wayne Joplin and wife Penny of Palestine, Thelma Sipes and husband William of Teague, Lisa Hazen of Michigan, Theresa Strange and husband Randy of New Albany, Ind., Timmy Hazen of Indiana, and J.R. Hazen and wife Lacey of Teague; 22 grandchildren, Johnny, Melissa, Michael, Sammy, Angie, Tony, Lachrisha, Mindy, Regina, Geneva, Kimberly, Stephanie, Jessica, Denise, Jimmy, Derek, Katy, Haley, Cassie, Jodi, Harley, and Addison; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Paul Hazen, Hershel Hines, and Ronald L. Hines; two sisters, Mamie Edwards and Ruby Hooten; numerous other relatives and friends.

Mr. Hazen was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Hazen; one son, Donald Joplin; one grandson, Brian Tanner Sipes; his mother, Edith Wilson; his father, Jesse Hazen; his maternal grandparents, George and Mamie Wilson; and two brothers, Eugene Hines and Albert Hines Jr.
