Marie was born on Aug. 13, 1929, in Kingsville, to Clifford and Elizabeth Stephenson Pope. In 1938, they moved to Teague because her dad took a job with the railroad. She graduated from Teague High School with the class of 1946.
Mrs. Lawrence was very active in church, school and community activities. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Teague, where she served as financial secretary, member of the choir, member of the administrative board and the Friendship Circle. In the schools, she was very supportive of her children and all of their activities. She worked with the PTA and was a member of the Band Parents organization. In the Teague community, she served and volunteered in L awrence many positions. She was on the Teague Hospital Board, was the first president of the Hospital Auxiliary, worked the blood drives and was on the Board of Directors for the Teague Chamber of Commerce. She helped with the Christmas Needy Children Fund, Arts and Crafts Shows, Park Fest, Teague Baseball Association, and the Thursday Morning Breakfasts. Marie helped numerous organizations in Teague throughout the years with fundraising campaigns by making her delicious tiered chocolate cakes to be sold or auctioned. In 1996, Marie was the recipient of the Boyd Cup Award, recognizing her for her many years of dedication and service to the Teague community.
Marie was quiet, thoughtful and selfless, never seeking recognition or wanting to be in the spotlight. She was kind-hearted and helpful and her high moral standards served as a Christian example to her family and community. Service was just a way of life for her. In her Boyd Cup recommendation letter, she is described very well: “Marie is just plain polite at all times and to all persons; old and young, learned and unlearned, rich and poor.”
