Florence Barker

Funeral services for Mrs. Florence Barker, 97, will be held on Thursday, June 6, at 2 p.m. at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague. Bro. Scott Matthews will officiate. Interment will follow the services at Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday with the family present from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Barker passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019, at the Skilled Care Nursing Home in Mexia.

She was born in Winslow, Arizona, but grew up and attended schools in National City, California near San Diego.

After graduating high school, she served as a Librarian in a children’s library in National City before marrying Edwin Barker on December 21, 1942. The Barkers shared over sixty-two years of marriage together before being separated by his death. She moved around to numerous locations in California with her husband’s work before moving to Teague in the mid-1940s. Mrs. Barker worked as a Medical Assistant for some twenty-four years in Teague for Doctors Gage, Cox, and Halbert. She was a longtime and active member of First Baptist Church in Teague. She served on numerous committees, active in countless ministries, was a member of the choir for over fifty years, and was a member when the church burned in 1946 and was rebuilt in 1948. Mrs. Barker also took many trips with her husband all over the United States with Campers on Missions.

She is survived by two sons, Franklin Paul (Lin) Barker and wife Cheryl and Edwin Michael (Mickey) Barker and wife Carolyn all of Teague; four grandchildren, Paul Barker and wife Judy, Leann Inderman and husband Lance, Alissa Barlow and husband Jason, and Lance Barker and wife Kelly; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Barker was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Richard Barker; and two sisters, Lucille Sheddan and Barbara Zedicher.

The family requests memorials be made to the Lord’s Community Storehouse, 402 Main Street, Teague, TX 75860.
