The angelic hosts came for Elbert Gillespie of Fairfield Monday, Aug. 20, 2018 in the Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Hospital in Waco, among loving family and devoted friends. Funeral services took place Saturday, Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church, 209 N. 6th Street, Teague with his son, Lionel Gillespie officiating and his nephew, Dr. L. J. Gillespie of San Antonio as eulogist. Interment was in the Salem Cemetery, FCR 684, Teague with military funeral honors by VFW Chapter 5872 of Fairfield. Deacon Elbert Gillespie was the last child born to Roosevelt and Lucille Wade Gillespie in Freestone County. He grew up in the Furney Richardson Community and received his early education in the Furney Richardson public schools. Elbert graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Teague with the Class of 1962. His Christian education began at First Baptist Church North Teague where Rev. W.H.T. Gillespie baptized him. He was a deacon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church at the time of his death and was a member of The Men And Women On The Move For Christ Organization. Elbert enlisted in the United States Army and served faithfully during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged with the Purple Heart Award. Mr. Gillespie and Yvonne Scott were married in Fairfield and they adopted a son, Juan Gillespie, who preceded them in death. The following siblings preceded Elbert in death: Elvessie Gillespie, Claudine Gillespie, Melvin Gillespie, Doris Gillespie McWilliams, Lester Gillespie, Rev. Wardell Gillespie, Choice Mae Gillespie, Nelda Jean Gillespie, and Rev. Cleo Gillespie. Those left to cherish his memory are: His son, Lionel Bernard Gillespie and wife, Jordan along with grandson, Brandon Gillespie all of Hickory Creek; his brother, Rev. Charles Gillespie and wife, Diane, Ft. Worth, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Moore’s Angelic Funeral Home provided the final care for the Elbert Gillespie family.
