Funeral services for A. E. Holtz were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 4 at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague. The Reverend Richard Gillet officiated. Interment followed the services at Greenwood Cemetery with U. S. Navy Honors and Masonic graveside rites. Visitation was held prior to the service on Wednesday beginning at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. Holtz passed away on Friday, March 30, 2018, at his residence near Buffalo. He was born on Jan. 29, 1925, in Kingsville to A. E. Holtz, Sr. and Leora Alverda Horton Holtz. A. E. served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He fought in the battle of Imo Jima in the Pacific Theatre as a member of the Navy’s 5th Amphibious Forces, and received the Asiatic- Pacific (1 Star), Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He married Jean Thomas on Dec. 16, 1945, in Glendale, Calif. just after the end of World War II, and shared over seventy-two years of marriage together. He enjoyed living on his ranch in Leon County and raising cattle for most of his life. Holtz was a former member of the Pipefitters Local No. 211 in Houston, the Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, a member of the Admiral Nimitz National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, and a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association. Holtz was raised as a Master Mason at Old Ocean Masonic Lodge #1284 in Sweeney and later joined Boggy Lodge #739 in Teague where he was a Past Master. He recently received his 70- year membership pin. A. E. was a member of the Scottish Rite and El Mina Shrine in Galveston. He was also of 65-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, active in three chapters during his life: #873 in Sweeney where he was a Past Worthy Patron five times, Teague #468 where he was Past Worthy Patron two times, and Buffalo #157. Holtz was a member of the Stewart Memorial Methodist Church in Buffalo. He is survived by his wife Jean Thomas Holtz of Buffalo; one son, Charles Edward Holtz and wife Janelle of El Campo; four grandchildren; two step-grandsons; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers-in-law, Robert Charles Thomas and wife Katherine of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Carl L. Kendall of Dripping Springs; two nephews; two great-nieces; one great-great-nephew; and one great-great-niece. Holtz’s favorite Bible verse was John 3:16.
