arnett A graveside memorial service for Charles Gene Barnett will be held on Friday, Aug. 4, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Driver Cemetery in Teague.

Charles Gene Barnett, born Aug. 31, 1934, in Denton,to Robert Caldwell Barnett and Verla Belle Gore Barnett.

Charles was the youngest of five children.

He was preceded in death by brothers Clarence W. Barnett, Robert C. Barnett Jr and Bill M. Barnett, and by sister Helen C. Barnett.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Sandra Riley Barnett, daughter Leigh Barnett Miller, son Charles Christopher Barnett, son-in-law Rev. Mitchell Miller, daughter- in-law Persephone Meredith Barnett, and grandchildren Nathan Miller, Emma Miller, Jackson Barnett, Lorelei Barnett, and Matthew Barnett.

Charles graduated from Denton High School in 1950.

He served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1954 in the Atlantic Fleet on the world’s first true angled- deck aircraft carrier, the USS Antietam.

He attended the University of Texas at Austin on the G.I. Bill, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

He then earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Texas Law School.

In his legal career, he worked with the U.S. Tax Division of Justice, Vial, Hamilton, Koch, Tubb, Knox and Stradley Law firm and also as in-house counsel with the Southwestern Life and Philadelphia Life insurance companies.

Charles was admitted to practice both in the State of Texas and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Charles was a member and deacon of Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas, and he was a respected friend, devoted husband, and beloved father, grandfather, and uncle.
