Emily Gregory

Emily Sue Miller Gregory passed away on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2022, at her home near Streetman, at the age of 92.

She was surrounded by her loving family and her special canine children, Molly and Susie. Sue was born on Sept. 22, 1930, to Roy and Clara Barton Miller of Wortham.

She grew up on the Freestone County family farm her grandfather, John Parrot Jackson bought in 1897, known as the Caney Place Ranch. Sue’s early life was spent helping her mother care for her siblings and their large extended family.

On June 28, 1947, Sue married James W. Gregory of Streetman. James and Sue raised their children on the family farm near Wortham until 1965 when James accepted a job as Deputy for Sheriff J.R. Sessions Jr. and they moved their family to Fairfield.

The family lived in the jail where they raised their children and Sue cared for inmates with her wellknown cooking skills. Sue became the first female deputy sheriff in Freestone County, where she served seven years.

In 1972, James accepted a job with Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raiser Association, and they moved to Athens. Sue was employed with the City of Athens until 1975 when they moved back to Fairfield where she began work for the Texas Department of Transportation.

In 1978, Sue was elected to the office of District Clerk, where she faithfully served the people of Freestone County for 16 years. Sue loved living in the country.

She particularly loved watching the abundant wildlife and birds which surrounded her home and gardening with her son, Jim. She enjoyed and highly excelled at preparing wonderful meals for her family and friends.

Her giving heart was always focused G regory on others and their needs. She was the rock of a large family where she deeply influenced the lives of each of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and an abundance of nieces and nephews.

She will be missed, but her legacy is large and will not be soon forgotten.

Sue is preceded in death by her husband, James Gregory, her parents, Roy and Clara Barton Miller, a sister Betty Lou Miller, brothers Rudy Miller and K.W. Oliver.

She is survived by her children Stanley Gregory and wife Sally, James (Jim) Gregory, Renee Reynolds and husband Gene; sister, Spring Johnson and husband Tom; grandchildren Kasi Williamson, Kelly Walters and husband Robbie, Paige Turner and husband Corey, Lyndsey Cherry and husband Jake; great grandchildren Gregory Williamson, Elle Williamson, Paisley Lewis, Tate Lewis, Will Cherry, Jase Cherry; and many nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Birdston Cemetery near Streetman.
