Winter storm is the cause of 78 reported accidents

According to Freestone County Sheriff Jeremy Shipley, a total of 78 accidents and stranded motorists occurred in Freestone County during the winter storm between Thursday, Feb. 11, and Friday, Feb. 19.

On Thursday, Feb. 11, shortly after 10 a.m. temperatures began to drop and rain along with sleet began to fall causing all Freestone County schools to close by noon.

“Roadways are increasingly dangerous especially around the bridges and less traveled areas. There are slick spots on I-45 and there are several issues heading north from our county on the interstate,” Shipley said on Thursday, Feb. 11. “Information has come in regarding bridges and slick roadway conditions on Hwy 75, Hwy 179, and FM 833. If you see a bridge, you need to consider it icy/slick.”
