TISD announces teacher, employee of month; both dedicated to their jobs, helping students

Teague ISD personnel Kellie Taylor and Luz Alvarado are both dedicated to their job assignments in the district and they really enjoy helping students, apparently going over and beyond expectations.

Taylor was named Teacher of the Month and Alvarado was named Employee of the Month for September by Superintendent Chris Skinner at last week’s regularly scheduled schoolboard meeting. Taylor teaches technical writing and senior seminar classes and Alvarado is the registrar.

Taylor is a Teague product and graduated from THS before attending Texas A&M, where she received her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. She earned her teacher certification through Texas Teachers. This is her second year to teach.

“I decided to become a teacher because I enjoy helping others, especially helping others learn,” she said. “I love being a part of the learning process of the students. I am not just a teacher, but I am also their cheerleader and motivator when they need it the most.”

Because people learn differently, Taylor said she really appreciates the challenge of finding what works best for each student as an individual.

“And I am not just teaching, I also am learning. I am continuously learning from my students or seeking education to better myself as an educator,” she said.

In regard to her learning experience, Taylor said she did not learn the most when everything was going easy. “I learned the most when I was struggling.” She realizes the same for her students.

She enjoys her senior seminar classes because they are designed to help students to become adults and prepares them to face adult challenges, such as finding a job, dealing with taxes, setting goals and developing social skills. “Hopefully, these students will remember what they are being taught and say someday, “Oh, this is what Ms. Taylor was talking about my senior year.”

Taylor is married to her husband Aaron and they have a three-year old son, Wesley, and a one-year old daughter, Tinsley.

Alvarado is possibly known by everyone at THS because she works in the main office and everyone needs her help. Aside from greeting people as they enter the office, her responsibilities include enrolling and registering students, balancing the checkbook, sending off and requesting transcripts and records, and working as an administrative assistant to the principal and assistant principal.

She, too, is a THS graduate and she chose employment at the school because she enjoys helping students and her coworkers who she describes as an amazing group.

Alvarado has been a member of the THS staff five years. This is the second time during her tenure she has been named Employee of the Month.
