Stick Horse Rodeo is big hit for first night

Four smiling rodeo athletes took home trophy buckles Monday night after a hard-fought round of stick bull riding and stick horse barrel racing, kicking off the official rough stock and speed competitions for the 2019 Freestone County Fair and Rodeo.

Emcee LaDonna Turner guided the competitors through their respective events, which were each divided into 4 and under divisions and age 5 through 7 divisions.

In the stick horse barrel racing, winner of the 4 and under division was 4-year-old Kaselynn Brooke, daughter of Cheyenne and Matthew Brooke of Teague, who brought her swift steed across the finish line in 16.49 seconds.

In the more senior 5- to 7-year-old group, 5-year-old Avery Roberts blew past the competition with a time of 18.38. She is the daughter of Emily and Anthony Roberts of Fairfield.

In the rough stock competition, 4-and-under winner was 3-year-old Maze Cathey, son of Brittnee and Bobby Cathey of Teague, who scored 66 points on his stick bull ride.
