State offers no relief in county appraisal values

Property owners in Freestone county, if they’ve checked their mailbox since Friday, have most likely received their annual statement of appraised property values from the Freestone Central Appraisal District. Facebook posts are trending blaming the appraisals for an increase in taxes during the COVID-19 crisis, but the chief appraiser says a closer look at the situation is especially warranted this year.

This evergreen problem goes beyond that of many property owners’ inability to distinguish between the job of the appraisal district, which is to set values, and the job of taxing entities to determine how much a property owner has to pay in taxes, FCAD Chief Appraiser Bud Black said.
