Local man stands guard with honor

Teague 2017 graduate, U.S. Navy Seaman Hayden Roberts, was part of the ceremonial honor guard standing watch as former president George H.W. Bush lay in repose at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston.

In an article from KWTX, Roberts said,” It feels amazing, but more or less I don’t think about it too much when it comes to it because in the end I have a job to do and I have to do it to perfection because it’s to honor him (Bush) and to represent the Navy in every sense of the word, represent what I do for my country and for my job.”

Shortly after enlisting into the Navy and before leaving for boot camp, Roberts learned his father, Mike, 45, had been diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. His father died only a few weeks later and Roberts returned to boot camp to finish among the top of his class of 800 recruits and was chosen for the Navy Honor Guard and stationed in Washington, D.C.
