Hog attack a reminder to stay alert

Freestone County, like most of East Texas, continues to be a haven for feral hogs, and after a woman in Chambers County was mauled to death by the animals, citizens are reminded to be cautious and alert when the creatures are near.

The victim was killed early in the morning of Sunday, Nov. 24 near Anahuac, about 50 miles east of Houston. She arrived at a rural home situated on about 10 acres, parking just a short distance from the front door. Before she could make it inside, she was attacked by what investigators believe was more than one hog, based on the bites covering her body. She died from blood loss before the occupants of the house realized what had happened.

The attacks are rare, experts say, and her death marks only the fifth officially reported fatality since 1825. Three of the five fatal attacks came after a pig was wounded by a hunter. Statistically, non-lethal confrontations are more common – but still less common than catching a disease from a feral hog, or colliding with one while driving a vehicle.
