The heart of a volunteer... Kathy Oakes Rhea

When we grew up it wasn’t called volunteering,” said Kathy Oakes Rhea. “Someone came to your door and said I need help with this or that and you helped them. It was country style volunteering! You were not paid because the help you provided was your reward.” Kathy Oakes was born in Freestone County and spent her life here raising her kids and teaching Teague’s kids. She retired from Sallie Mounger Elementary School in 2005, after 30 years of service. She decided she would volunteer and went in search of a cause. One day, when shopping Kathy saw something. “

 

I looked at a little sign that said support your volunteer fire department,” she said. “I had my cause.” Kathy decided to have a fundraiser and she hired The Gimbals singing family to come and perform. The event was a sell-out and $3200 was donated to the TVFD. She did the same for her next fundraiser and co
