Freestone, Limestone COVID case comparison

A comparison of reported COVID-19 cases in schools in Freestone and Limestone counties shows interesting, though not necessarily statistically significant, differences between the two groups, with the main one being the number of teachers and other staff who test positive for the novel coronavirus.

A look at the numbers reported to the data board maintained by the Texas Department of State Health Services shows that the number of students with a positive COVID-19 test is roughly the same between schools in the two counties. However, those who work at the schools located in one county are much more likely to report a positive test than those in the other - though the numbers are not as clear.

An accounting of the numbers used follows: first, the total number of students on a county’s campuses is gleaned from the data on the state spreadsheet, which last updated that particular number on October 30, 2020 - hardly a recent figure, and one that has likely changed significantly as many districts have eliminated remote learning for all except sick or quarantining students. However, the same snapshot day is used for each campus and added into a county total.
