Freestone certified values released to taxing entities

Property owners in Freestone county protested their taxable values at a rate triple the usual amount, meaning the amount of certified taxable values released recently to taxing entities is not as precise as in previous years.

This year’s release of numbers was unique because as of certification on July 25, $76 million worth of property was still under protest, meaning the value of that property could change. Those parcels are added to the rolls at last year’s values, Freestone Central Appraisal District Chief Appraiser Bud Black said.

The total value of property under protest before hearings started in June was $1.217 billion, a substantial increase over last year, which totaled $528 million.

The high number of parcels under protest has resulted in the number of protest hearings more than doubling for this year, he said. In 2019, 1,079 protests were filed, resulting in 357 scheduled hearings. This year, a total of 3,649 protests were filed, leading to 991 scheduled hearings.
