Former prisoner: ‘Drinking while driving is just not worth the risk of the horrors of prison’

Most folks who have never been in prison have a preconceived notion how life must be behind bars. This young man, once a professional, confirms that his life behind bars was not necessarily pleasant, but his perspective of it and his survival might surprise some.

Incarceration offers an inmate time for decision-making. This story is based on an interview the Teague Chronicle recently conducted with a multiple-DWI offender, who was incarcerated in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. To protect his identity, the offender will be called “Joe.” No specifics will be provided about his offenses.

Before beginning the interview, Joe said his focus for agreeing to the interview is hopefully to touch or reach others who may have a lack of judgment when they drink and end up throwing away their lives uselessly as he did.
