Commissioners hire elections administrator

Freestone County Commissioners agreed at last week’s meeting to hire an elections administrator, consolidating duties currently performed by at least two different county offices and housing all matters having to do with elections in a one-stop shop.

The court set the salary for the position at $34,800 annually. A motion to pay $36,000 died for lack of a second, as did a motion to pay $33,600.

Now that commissioners approved the creation of the position, the person will be appointed by the county election commission, which consists of the county judge, the county clerk, the tax assessor-collector and the county chair of each political party. This will take place within 12 months of the date of the commissioners court order.

The position is full-time, said County Judge Linda Grant, “but is an exempt position that would not have overtime.”
