Candidates for public office speak at FCRTA forum

There were very little seating left to hear 20 candidates in the contested races from governor to county district clerk, sponsored by Freestone County Retired Teachers Association on Feb. 5 at the Fairfield High School cafeteria.

Donna Senter, President of the FCRTA, welcomed guests while everyone enjoyed a chili supper. The forum was later handed over to Emcee Buzz Russell to introduce each of the candidates running for public office.

Russell opened the meeting with the importance that not only is it a right and a privilege to vote, but “the moral obligation to vote, a responsibility to those founding fathers and founding mothers to vote to keep the democracy alive. In order to do that we must participate. And to quote Franklin Delano Roosevelt, ‘Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely, the real safeguard of democracy. There fore, is education.’”
