Alderman hire police officer, discuss off-duty police work

After an executive session at the City of Teague Aldermen meeting on Monday night, aldermen approved the employment of Jake Fitch as a police officer for the Teague Police Department.

Before going into the executive session, the aldermen went into a lengthy discussion about allowing Teague Police officers the ability to work off-duty private contract work. According to City Administrator Theresa Bell, several businesses have approached the city about contracting an officer to work while off-duty.

Both Bell and Teague Chief of Police DeWayne Philpott brought up various points about liability and other off-duty assignments. After multiple questions and not having a clear direction to head, the aldermen agreed to create a workshop to discuss all the details, guidelines, and restrictions later this year after the completion of the budget workshops. The aldermen asked Bell and Philpott to bring all options to the workshop to determine what will be best for the Teague Police Department.
