Was Lincoln assassinated or executed?

To understand and appreciate Abraham Lincoln’s Execution written by John Chandler Griffin published by Pelican Publishing, one must make the distinction between two very important words - assassinate and execute. Assassinate means “to murder by sudden or secret attack” while execute means “to do what is required by a decree.” Griffin claims that Lincoln was executed.

What would the execution of Lincoln accomplish? According to the author, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president serving during the Civil War and immediately after the surrender of the Confederate forces at Appomattox, proposed a reconstruction program for the South, which blocked the schemes of those wanting to take advantage of the spoils of war.. Lincoln’s plan was generous with healing the nation as its main goal.
