Alan Simpson, long time majority Republican whip, earned a reputation for speaking his mind and enduring the consequences.  

A whip assures that the members of his party vote according to the party’s position and generally hopes to maintain unity in the party.  Few succeeded more than Simpson.  

Shooting From the Lip - The Life of Senator Al Simpson written by Donald Loren Hardy and published by the University of Oklahoma Press is a no-holds barred accounting of the Wyoming politician.  

When Simpson became the whip, he decided to keep a journal to record his long tenure.  The journal eventually became nineteen volumes. Simpson gave his longtime chief of staff, Donald Hardy, the entire records of his time in Congress.
