During the urban crisis in the mid 20th century, many white people fled the inner cities of the great metropolises around the country for the safety in the suburbs.
It was the influx of Latinos that kept the inner cities from collapsing into urban wastelands such as Detroit and Cleveland. In Chicago more than 600,000 residents fled, but an influx of 370,000 Latinos after 1980 saved the Windy City from collapse.
