Observances: Show up

Woody Allen coined the phrase in one of his movies, “80 percent of life is showing up.” I was viewing a documentary the other night on the Dallas Carter 1989 football team that won a state football championship and then had it revoked because a key player got a failing grade in a course, thus being ineligible. The case played out in the courtroom long enough for the season to be over. The great debate was whether a grade had been changed.

Lost in all the controversy was the fact that the kid never showed up for class. He took tests and turned in papers, but could not be bothered to come to class. The teacher subsequently voiced the opinion that if the kids showed up for all his classes and stayed awake, he made sure they passed.
