Observances: Fear vs Hope, Pessimism vs optimism

Real life statistics indicate that you have a greater chance of getting hit by lightning than being a murder victim. However, based on watching the news every day, one would think that danger lurks on every street corner. The simple fact and always has been is that fear and pessimism is much more believable than hope and optimism.

There is an old story about the man in Cincinnati telling his barber he had finally saved up enough money to take a trip to the Vatican to see the Pope. His barber laughed and told him he was wasting his money, the airplane trip was going to be terrible, wouldn’t find a place to stay, nobody got to see the Pope and he would end up depressed about the foolish decision.
