Joseph McCoy’s Great Gamble - The Chisholm Trail

There are many stories and tales concerning the Chisholm Trail. It is a favored part of many Wild West movies and television shows. There have been many songs and stories featuring the dusty trail, lack of water, tired cowboys and all the troubles moving thousands of longhorn cattle  to Abilene, Kansas. The Chisholm Trail written by James E. Sherow and published by the University of Oklahoma tells the complete story of the cattle industry in the period and the characters involved. However what is known today as the Chisholm Trail is not completely accurate. Those who drove cattle from deep south Texas to Abilene, Kansas were not on this famous trail until they crossed the Red River. One cowboy once said, “We knew that if we kept on, we would eventually get on the Chisholm Trail, so that is what we called it as soon as we started.”
