America to find out if there’s any ‘roar’ left

Tom Landry once said about football in the NFL that it is much harder to stay on top than it is to get to the top. I thought about this while reading an essay on the rise and fall of great empires, like the Dutch in the 1600s and Great Britain in the 1800s and each demonstrated the same elements of rising and falling to new competitors.

Each empire rests upon an educated citizenry, industriousness, investment in the future and a capitalistic economic democratic system that produces rising standards shared across the broad citizenry. However, after so long on top, a nation collectively decides that it doesn’t want to keep the same regiment that produced an empire.
