Jim Lawrence is following in his father’s footsteps.

Dick Lawrence was a Justice of the Peace in Precinct 2 for more than 20 years. After Tuesday night’s Republican primary, Jim Lawrence will be Justice of the Peace in Precinct 2, as well.

Lawrence took 57.43% of the votes. His nearest competitor, Kristina Capp Flannery, managed 16.86% of the votes for Justice of the Peace.

After 40 plus years in the banking industry, Lawrence retired six years ago.

“I thought it (JP) might be something I would be interested in,” Lawrence said. “It will take up some of my time. I ran and thank goodness I got elected.”

Over in the county courthouse, Jeannie Keeney will remain the county treasurer after she  outpaced Tammy Harris. Keeney’s 1,516 votes (52.15%) were enough to beat Harris’ 1,371 votes (47.49%).

The County Commissioner Precinct 4 race, was a three-way affair, and incumbent Clyde Ridge (590 votes, 67.82%) was able to hold off both challengers, Adam Minze (167 votes, 19.20%) and John T Massey (113 votes, 12.99%).

A majority of the candidates and their friends and family hung outside the county election’s office waiting for results from election administrator Renee McBay.

The polls officially closed at 7 p.m. and the final results were published at 9:20 p.m.

In total 3,551 ballots were cast, with only 327 ballots cast in the Democratic primary. Voter turnout was at 25.67%. Mail-in ballots were not counted yet as of presstime.

Federal Races

In the U.S. Representative, District 6 race, Jake Ellzey cruised to a primary victory tallying 71.91% of votes. Same for Pete Sessions in the District 17 race. Sessions beat out three challengers and garnered 68.76% of the votes.

Governor’s Race

The battle for the governor’s mansion in Austin will heat up as Greg Abbot will be the republican nominee after beating out seven challengers. In the end Abbott ran away with the primary with 67.25% of the votes.

Opposite Abbott in November will be Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke.

O’Rourke tallied 91.15% of the votes, leaving no doubt in his party's primary.

Attorney General Runoff

Ken Paxton failed to garner 50% of his primary votes and will face George P. Bush in the May runoff election. Paxton, the Trump-endorsed candidate received 42.89% of the primary votes and Bush had 22.33% of the votes, good enough for second-most in the election.

The runoff is scheduled for May 24.

District 13

By far the tightest race of the night is being run by Angelia Orr and former Limestone County Sheriff Dennis D. Wilson, both vying for the District 13 State Representative nomination.

Orr has received 9.676 votes (51.74%) and Wilson has received 9.026 votes (48.26%.) The race is still not over as McLennan County is still waiting for the results of one of its polling places as well as mail-in ballots left to count.
