urks Graveside services for Wanda McSwane Burks will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Salem Cemetery near Freestone. Brother Steve Cowart will officiate.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
Mrs. Burks passed away Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022, at her residence near Donie. She was born in Teague on March 12, 1937. Wanda married Rufus Burks on March 20, 1952, and shared more than 70 years of marriage together. She worked as a beautician more than 30 years. She operated her own beauty shop in Teague and her mother worked with her for many years. Mrs. Burks loved to travel and take camping trips with her husband, family and friends. She enjoyed watching the Hallmark Channel, the occasional trip to a casino or Fredericksburg and working crossword puzzles. Mrs. Burks had a “green thumb” and spent hours growing flowers and plants. She was also an excellent cook and always had lunch provided for her grandchildren during their school days. Mrs. Burks joined Eighth Avenue Baptist Church on May 9, 1965, and was a member for more than 57 years.
She is survived by her husband, Rufus Burks of Donie; one son, Joey Burks and wife Becky of Teague; seven grandchildren, Mike Strader and wife Leah, Kerrisa Burks, Angie McAdams and husband Tony, Keitha Whitaker, Kensey Tucker and husband Bruce, Kylen Burks, and Kelsie Palmore and husband Chase; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Freddie McSwane and Myrtle McSwane; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Burks was preceded in death by one son, Kerry Burks; one daughter, Debbie Strader; one grandson, Korey Burks; her parents, Alden and Cora McSwane; and two brothers, W.R. McSwane and Jerry McSwane.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Eighth Avenue Baptist Church, 201 S. 8th Ave., Teague, TX 75860.
