Herbert Jones Jr. was born March 1, 1935, as the fifth child of Effie Blakely-Jones and Herbert (Jack) Jones Sr., who lived in Furney Richardson in Freestone County.

Herbert accepted Christ as an early age. He continued his love for Christ as he taught Sunday School and served as a Deacon of Asia Primitive Baptist Church. Later in his spiritual walk, he was called to preach the Word of God as a minister. He instilled in his children how important it was to have a personal relationship with God.

Herbert was an energetic strong athlete. He was an excellent basketball player, received a scholarship to Prairie View University. He also played baseball with the Negro Major Baseball League as back catcher playing in local games only. The strong and sturdy background in baseball led him to be become a coach for the Hall and Owens Little League Baseball Team for Teague, Texas. The community was inspired by his strength, love, generosity, and his affection shown to friends and strangers. He was a consistent example for his 10 children as well. We, his children not only had him as an excellent father, but some of his children had the opportunity to have him as a phenomenal Little League Baseball coach. Earl, Ronald, Donald, LaShanda, Darrell, and Jerrold all had the opportunity to win championships with the love of their life – their dad, Herbert Jones, Jr. The Hall and Owens Little League Baseball Team won multiple championships under his coaching abilities.

Herbert Jones, Jr. worked faithful for Mr. Rufus Hall, Mr. Clydell Webb, Lawyer W. A. Keils, and Dr. EV Moore (as a chaplain). He also worked at the Teague Brick Yard and after he retired, he started his own Lawn Service business. The work ethic he exemplified were undeniably sound.

Herbert was an amazing father. He and Annie Joe High-Jones raised 10 strong independent children, Herbert S. Jones (Denise), Eva J. Wadley, James L. Jones (Yolanda), Patricia D. L. Maxwell (Darrell), Earl G. Jones (Tonya), Ronald K. Jones (Sandi), Donald K. Jones, Darrell L. Jones, LaShanda Jones, Jerrold L. Jones, Sr. (Kim). He showed loyalty to his family by providing for them, teaching, protecting, an ongoing allegiance to his family by attending every football and basketball game, supporting the cheerleaders, being present in any event or activity (even chess competitions). Herbert Jones, Jr. was a well-founded, amazing, spiritual, fun, active, and overall phenomenal in the eyes of his children. He never met a stranger during his journey in life which is shown even during his rest.
