Carolyn Jean Thomas Holtz

Graveside services for Carolyn Jean Thomas Holtz will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Greenwood Cemetery in Teague. The Rev. Richard Gillet will officiate.

There will not be a visitation at the funeral home. Mrs. Holtz passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 1, 2022, in Fort Worth. She was 95 years old.

Jean was born on Feb. 9, 1927, in Fort Worth to Dora and Charles Thomas. She graduated from Verdugo Hills High School in Tujunga, CA. She married AE Holtz on Dec. 16, 1945, in Glendale, CA.

After high school, Jean attended the University of Houston. She was the secretary to the principal of Sweeney High School. She was also a substitute teacher. Later, she worked in the office of Fish Construction at the Phillips plant in Old Ocean, Texas. After she retired, Jean was an active member of the Red Hat band for several years. This was a group of ladies from the Buffalo area who went to nursing homes and performed skits and sang – all while wearing matching outfits and red hats! She was a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was a member of Methodist churches in Sweeney and Teague and most recently Stewart Memorial Methodist Church in Buffalo. Jean loved reading her Bible and her Jesus Calling devotional every day. She also loved to read financial journals and was buying/selling stocks even in her 95th year! Jean was very smart and a meticulous record-keeper. She could clearly recall financial details from several years back.

She was also very, very organized. After she passed away, clothes were needed for the mortuary. In Jean’s closet were clothes, in a dry-cleaning bag, clearly marked FUNERAL. Attached to the back was a baggie containing her earrings. She was a woman who knew exactly what she wanted! She loved listening to dance music. Just a couple of days before Jean passed away, she was still tapping her toes to “The Best of Lawrence Welk.”

A very special thank you to Bridgett and April, Jean’s loving care-givers. These last few weeks were made easier for all of us because of their love for Jean.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, AE Holtz. She is survived by her son Charles and his wife Janelle; three grandchildren, including Steven Edward Holtz, Marilyn Marie Fondon, Dustin Wayne Holtz; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Charles Thomas of Hattiesburg, MS, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jean and AE were very supportive of Scottish Rite For Children Hospital and Shriner’s Hospital For Children. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Jean’s name to either of these hospitals would be appreciated.

Those who wish may visit www.bowersfuneralhome.net to sign the memorial guestbook or to leave a message for the family.
