Roping a scholarship
Rodeo runs in the background and through the veins of Teague High School senior Kendal Turner, who committed last week to join the Hill College Rebels rodeo team in Hillsboro.
Kendal is the daughter of Trent Turner of Teague, and Samantha Fleet and stepfather Chris of Marlin.
Her rodeo ancestors on her father’s side include her dad, a calf roper and working cowboy; grandparents, LaDonna Turner, a barrel racer, and Danny Clyde Turner, a working cowboy and rodeo pickup man, both of Teague; and her great-grandfather, the late Glendon Carroll, a calf roper, of Teague.
On her mother’s side, grandmother Fancy Stover was a barrel racer, grandfather Randy Hope was a steer roper, her mother Samantha was a barrel racer, and her stepfather Chris Fleet was a steer roper.
Stepbrother Parker Fleet competed in the collegiate finals last year with Hill College and won a reserve champion spot in saddle bronc riding and is competing on the pro circuit right now. Stepbrother Tanner Fleet bulldogged in amateur rodeos and made the CPRA finals four times. Both stepbrothers are Hill graduates, where Parker studied welding and Tanner studied firefighting.
