Freezing temps, ice, and snow… Winter storm plaques county for week

It is going down in the books as a historic winter storm! Gov. Abbott declared a state of emergency for all 254 counties in the state of Texas on Saturday, February 13, ahead of the winter storm.

¨Every part of the state will face freezing conditions over the coming days, and I urge all Texans to remain vigilant against the extremely harsh weather that is coming,”Abbott said on Saturday. “Stay off the roads, take conscious steps to conserve energy, and avoid dangerous practices like bringing generators indoors or heating homes with ovens or stovetops. Our emergency response to this winter weather requires a collective approach between state agencies, local officials, and Texans throughout our communities to ensure the safety and security of the Lone Star State.”

Freestone County was hit this past Thursday, February 11, with the beginning of the winter storm that caused all schools to release at noon to get students home safely.

Rain, sleet, and ice caused road conditions to get dangerous on Thursday. The temperature remained below freezing and is not supposed to be above freezing again until Saturday, February 20. Basketball games were cancelled on Thursday night and postponed until Friday.
