Commissioners continue to deny starting pay increase

Freestone Couny Commissioners denied requested starting pay increases for jailers by taking no action Wednesday, April 24 during the regular Commissioner’s Court.

“We are asking for the starting pay for jailers to increase to $15 per hours,” Freestone County Sheriff, Jeremy Shipley, said. “This is where we are hurting and it is imperative that we raise these starting salaries.”

The potential for certificate pay and other pay increases were suggested to be discussed at budget time.

“The cost of our services increase five percent every year,” Shipley said. “We are five percent down on our budget and seven percent down on pay and here we sit in a hole that we can’t get out of.”

Precinct 2 Commissioner, Michael Daniels, explained his concern with the increase is where the money will come from.
