- VELMA IBUCK JACKSON


Mrs. Velma Jackson of Wortham, Texas passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2008, in a Desoto Hospital surrounded by loving family and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jackson were held on Saturday, March 22, 2008, at Beulah Missionary Baptist Church of Wortham with the pastor Rev. Lester Brown officiating. Interment was at the Blind Lemon Jefferson Cemetery in Wortham.

Mrs. Jackson grew up in Wortham, Texas and attended the Wortham Public Schools. She was a member of the Beulah Missionary Baptist Church and served on the Usher Board and as chairperson of the Kitchen Committee.

She worked at the Wortham Hospital for 24 years and was elected to the Wortham City Council on May 3, 2003. She served until her term ended.

Velma is survived by her sister Gladys McMullen of Wortham and her twin sister Thelma Pringle of Waco; her brother McKinley Griffin and wife Bernice of Lake Dallas; a special niece Evelyn Blair and husband Fred of Desoto and a host of other nieces nephews other relatives and friends.

JOHN PRITCHARD


John Henry Prichard, 86, of Fairfield, Texas, was called to Heaven on March 20, 2008. He was born on March 15, 1922, in Wingate, Texas, to Burton H. and Bertha Burkett Pritchard. He was a graduate of Texas A&M University in 1943 and attended Officer Candidate Training at Notre Dame before entering the war. He spent three years in the United States Navy during World War II, serving as gunnery officer on the USS L.S.T. 597 and later as Executive Officer on the same ship throughout the Pacific Campaign. He was discharged in 1946 as a Lieutenant (Jg).

His career as County Agriculture Agent began in 1946 as an assistant agent in Cameron County. The Pritchards moved to Freestone County on December 14, 1947. Mr. Pritchard led the transition from row-crop farming to a livestock dominated economy. Along with the changes came the use of fertilizer, hay production, and other improvements. John brought the first Coastal Bermuda grass to the county in 1949.

The county became a top cow-calf county in the state under his direction. Several thousand boys and girls came through the 4-H programs in the county during Pritchard’s tenure. Mr. John spent nearly thirty-two years as County Agent of Freestone County. He retired on August 31, 1979. Pritchard also helped with the formation of the County Farm Bureau, served on the Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, President of the Fairfield Rotary Club, and as Master of the Fairfield Masonic Lodge. He headed the Freestone County Fair for 32 years. Mr. John always strived to serve with honesty and integrity. He made many lasting association and friendships in the Fairfield/Freestone area as well as the state.

Mr. John loved the Lord and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church. He always kept up on current events by reading multiple newspapers daily. Family and friends alike enjoyed his quick wit and sense of humor. He won the respect of his family and numerous friends.

His wife of 41 years, Mary, passed away on August 26, 1985. He married Bobbie Hill on August 31, 1987. Bobbie passed away on August 23, 2006.

He is survived by his sons John Randall Pritchard and wife Nancie of Tyler, Wayne Henry Pritchard and wife Annette of Scurry, Jimmy Dale Pritchard and wife Jeannette of Forney and Danny Ray Pritchard and wife Brenda of Tulsa, Oklahoma. His stepchildren include Joan Hill and John Suel Hill of Palestine and Don Hill and wife Nellie of Mission, Texas. “Pepa’s” grandchildren include Holly Pritchard of Dallas, Traci Wallace and husband Chad of Denton, Lynsey Adame and husband Mark of Corpus Christi, Brad Pritchard and wife Kathleen of Keller, James Pritchard and wife Kim of Cache, Oklahoma, John Pritchard of Dallas, Chase Pritchard of Arlington, Julie Pritchard of College Station, and Tyler Pritchard of Flower Mound. Mr. John’s step grandchildren include Trevor Carr of Tulsa, Jonathan Hill of Tyler, Jennifer Willard and husband Shane of Palestine and Kenner Hill of Mission. His great grandchildren include Bailey Wallace, Kaylen and Joshua Pritchard and Madyson and Chloe Adame; step great grandchildren include Jackson Hill and Konnor Willard. He is also survived by his sisters Daphna Ritchey of Arlington, Elizabeth Atchley of Friendswood and his brother Bruce Pritchard of Waco.

A funeral service celebrating Mr. Pritchard’s life was held on Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at First Baptist Church. Dr. Jimmy Dale Pritchard, Rev. James Pritchard and Rev. Benny Mize officiated. Interment followed the services at Fairfield Cemetery.

TROY LARUE ALLISON


Funeral services for Mrs. LaRue Allison, 84, of Teague, Texas, were held on Thursday, March 20, 2008, at First Baptist Church in Teague.

Bro. Darrel Beggs officiated and interment followed the services at Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Allison was born on September 3, 1923, in Mexia, Texas and passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2008, at the Fairfield Rehabilitation Center in Fairfield, Texas.

She was raised in Mexia and graduated from Mexia High School in the class of 1941. She married William Donivan (Don) Allison in 1942 when they moved to Teague and her husband went to work for the B-RI Railroad. Mrs. Allison gave birth to a daughter in 1943 followed by a son the next year and another son the next year. She had three children after three years and one day of her marriage.

She shared over forty-four years with her husband before being separated by his death on January 13, 1987. Mrs. Allison served as chairperson of the Red Cross Drive in the 1950’s and was proud to have helped raise a large amount of money for the Red Cross. She was an avid reader. Mrs. Allison was a member of First Baptist Church in Teague for fifty-six years and taught Sunday school and was active in many church functions throughout the years.

Mrs. Allison is survived by her daughter Donna Williams and husband Mike of Rockwall; her sons Bill Allison and wife Sue and Joe Allison and wife Ruthie all of Teague; her grandchildren Jocey McCoy and husband Jeff of Prosper, Lindsey Williams and wife Pamela of Rockwall, Todd Allison and wife Monica of Teague, Rachel Anderson and husband Doug of Teague, Matt Allison of College Station, Troy Allison of Teague and Hayley Allison of Paducah Kentucky; three step-grandchildren Asa Hanrahan of Houston, Vicky Cearley of Choctaw Oklahoma and Tony Vaughn and wife Brittany of Teague; fourteen great grandchildren; her brother W.L. “Dub” Lindsey and wife Margaret of Teague; her sisters Betty Bernice Fuller of Corsicana and Mary Helen Russ of Houston; three special friends Fran Rogers, Joy Crundwell and Maxine Hartley all of Teague; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Allison was preceded in death by her husband Don Allison, her granddaughter Melissa Williams Cooke, her sister Winnie Louise Free and her brother Jack Johnson.

VIRGINIA MARTIN ADKISSON


Funeral services for Mrs. Virginia Martin Adkisson, 82, of Buffalo, Texas, were held on Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Gentry officiating. Interment followed the services at the Buffalo Cemetery.

Mrs. Adkisson was born on August 10, 1925, in Martintown, Freestone, Texas near Buffalo to Noah Martin and Mary Ann “Molly” Childre Martin. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Royce Martin.

Mrs. Adkisson is survived by her husband of 59 years, James E. “Gene” Adkisson of Buffalo; her daughter Gena Turner and husband Gary of Georgetown; her granddaughter Sandy Gentry and husband Mike of Salado Texas; great grandchildren Sarah and Mark Gentry of Salado; her sister-in-law Virginia Lee Martin of Humble; her sister Dixie Woodell and husband Gene of Bryan; her nephews Randy Martin and wife Melinda of Humble; Gene Martin Woodell of Bryan and John Royal Woodell of Bryan; her great nephew Matthew Martin of Humble; her great niece Lorie Kay Lewis and husband Rusty of Nederland; great great nephews Alec and Noah Lewis of Nederland.

After graduating from Buffalo High School in Buffalo, Texas in 1942, where she enjoyed playing volleyball and other sports, Mrs. Adkisson worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in the commercial Department in Huntsville until 1949 when she transferred to Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Dallas where she worked until 1956.

She married James E. “Gene” Adkisson of Jewett, Texas on September 3, 1949, and returned to Buffalo upon his retirement from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1983, having lived in Borger and Lubbock as well as Huntsville and Dallas.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Buffalo and is best remembered for her love of family and friends, for her enjoyment of reading and shopping for antiques and her enjoyment of beautiful flowers and landscapes.

A special thanks to Dr. J.H. Keller, Mary Davis, Doris Small and Larry Ranson for their excellent care and services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association and Alzheimers Research.
