Funeral services for Gerald Renolds Wilburn (Jerry) Miller, 88, of Mexia, were held on Monday, March 24, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church in Mexia. Rev. Ken Lane officiated and interment followed at the Point Enterprise Cemetery.
Mr. Miller was born on August 8, 1919, in Hydman, PA to the Orville Millers and passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2008, in the local hospital.
He was a retired accountant from Southwestern Electric Service Company having worked there for 30 years. He was a member of Springfield Lodge #74 for 61 years. He worked as an accountant and auto salesman for McKenzie Motors in Mexia, was a member of Teague Commandry #91, Waco Scottish Rite, Teague #320 RAM, Zerubbabel #26 R&SM, Mexia Baseball Association and an elder at the First Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Miller is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Troy and Jan Miller of Mexia; his grandchildren Leah and Tom Miller of Katy and James Ward of Mexia, his great grandchildren Jacob Miller and Joseph Miller of Katy and Cameryn Ward of Mexia.

PORTIA COYE BASS
Memorial services for Ms. Portia Coye Bass, 64, of Coolidge were held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at First Baptist Church of Coolidge. Rev Larry Holden conducted the services.
Ms. Bass was born on September 25, 1943, in Dallas, Texas to Robert (Bob) and Joann Bass and passed away on March 24, 2008, in a Waco hospital. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Coolidge.
She was preceded in death by her father Bob Bass and her sister Penny Bass.
Ms. Bass is survived by her mother Joann Bass Renfro of Waxahachie, her step father Allie Renfro, her son Hardy Bass and wife Laurica of San Antonio, her grandsons Samuel, Levi and Micah Bass, her sister Pam Bass of Galveston and her nephews Brandon and Adam Moore. Her special friends Robert and Margaret Sheppard, several cousins and many friends also survive Ms. Bass.

ALGIE BLACK
Funeral services for Mrs. Algie Black were held on Saturday, March 29, 2008, in the Chapel at Union Cemetery near Freestone, Texas.
Bro. Steve Cowart officiated and interment followed the services at Union Cemetery.
Mrs. Black passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, in Waco, Texas. She graduated from W.C. Stripling High School in Ft. Worth and worked for the Dallas I.S.D. in the cafeteria for many years, before moving to Teague and working for the T.I.S.D. for several years in the lunchroom. Mrs. Black was a member of Eighth Avenue Baptist Church for thirty years and worked in the nursery for many years.
She is survived by her son Larry G. Black and wife Delores of Waco; her daughter Shirley Hunter of Spokane, Washington; her granddaughter Holly Hunter of Baltimore, Maryland; her grandsons Lance Black of Pflugerville, Jesse Black and Shawn Black of Waco; her great grandchildren Kayla Black, J.J. Black, Patrick Black and Heather Black; her nieces Mollie Scruggs and husband Clinton of Teague, Martha Gilliam and husband Glynn of Graham and numerous other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Elton Black, eight brothers and one sister.

ALVIS WARD COBB, JR.
Alvis Ward Cobb, Jr. went to be with the Lord on March 24, 2008.
He was born on March 15, 1928, to parents Alvis Ward Cobb and Gladys Speer Cobb in Mexia, Texas. He spent his early years in Mexia, moved to Teague and graduated from Teague High School.
In 1945, Alvis enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the aircraft carrier USS Antietam. After his discharge from the Navy, he married Marilyn Russ in the First United Methodist Church of Teague on October 23, 1948. He began his career with Sinclair Oil Company in Mexia, Texas. Sinclair became Arco, and he retired in 1983 at Area Superintendent of the Arco Chemical Plant in Channelview, Texas.
After his retirement he and his wife bought a plant nursery in Point Blank, Texas, and they moved to their lake house on Lake Livingston where they lived for 28 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvis Ward Cobb, Sr. and Gladys Speer Cobb and his brother Donald Cobb.
Mr. Cobb is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Marilyn; his children Bruce Cobb of Baytown, Texas, Paul Cobb and wife Martha of Pasadena, Texas, Teresa Cobb Warren of League City, Texas, Cathy Cobb of Webster, Texas and Terah Aultman and husband Mark of Spring, Texas; his brother David Cobb and wife Nancy Roberts of Teague, Texas. He is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on March 27, 2008, at the League City United Methodist Church and a graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Teague.

MERL MARSH SHIVERS
Merl Marsh Shivers, 82, of Mexia, Texas, passed from this life on March 28, 2008, at the Haven Nursing Home in Mexia. A celebration of her life was held on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church of Mexia with the Reverend Brad Brittain officiating. Burial followed the services at Wortham Cemetery.
Merl was born on May 19, 1925, to Joe and Bertice Marsh in Flynn, Texas and spent the majority of her youth in Mexia where she attended Mexia High School. She received her bachelor’s degree in Teaching from Sam Houston State University in 1946 and a master’s degree in 1956. She married her husband of 59 years, James Shivers, in September of 1948 and moved back to Mexia to spend the majority of her teaching career, live on the family farm and raise her family.
Known to most as Mrs. Shivers because of her long teaching career of 38 years in Graford, Banquete, Lewisville, Fair Oaks, Point Enterprise, Forest Glade and Mexia Middle School her influence passed through two and three generations of students in the Mexia area.
She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Mexia where she taught Sunday school, worked tirelessly in the kitchen and was a faithful member of the Upper Room Sunday School Class. Upon retirement she and her husband James enjoyed many years of traveling and were active in square dancing and line dancing groups in the area She spent many years helping with Hospice where she was recognized as volunteer of the year. She loved people and volunteering her help throughout the community.
The love of her life was her family of which she is survived by her husband James C. Shivers of Mexia, her son and daughter-in law Terry Don and Janise Shivers of Mexia; her grandson Chris Shivers and special friend Kendra Woods and her great grandson Kaison; her sister Wanette Gafford of College Station; her brother-in-law Lawrence Shivers, Jr. of Abilene, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Billy and Byron (Beans) Bates of Dallas and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Lloyd Dillard Marsh.
Mrs. Shivers' nephews served as pallbearers.

MARY ETTA BEENE HEARN
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Etta Beene Hearn, 80, of Mexia, were held on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Blair-Stubbs Chapel in Mexia, Texas.
Edwin Sours officiated and burial followed at Salem Cemetery in Freestone County.
Mrs. Hearn was born on July 7, 1927, in Teague, Texas, to William and Lula Ann (Reynolds) Beene and passed away at Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia on March 28, 2008. She was a homemaker and also a Mary Kay Cosmetics representative. She was a member of Jehovah’s Witness.
She is survived by her daughters Marilyn Gale Logan of Mexia, Deanne Ward of Houston and Donna Good of Mexia; her grandchildren Laurie Simmons and husband Walter, Dawn Granberry and husband James, Wendy Hileman and husband Richard, Delaina Mangum, Miranda Heller, Hillary Heller, Hailey Heller, Landry Heller and Rowdy Good, seven great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, her sisters Carmie Sartor of Teague, May Ward of Wortham and Marilyn Finley of Hewitt and her brother William Beene of Wortham.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard Headley Hearn, two grandsons and five sisters.
Pallbearers for Mrs. Hearn were David Jackson, James Henry Sartor, Gilbert Oliver, Carl Heller, Bert Finely and David Sutherland.

RUBY FAYE SHORT
Funeral services for Ruby Faye Short, 72, of Teague, Texas were held on April 1, 2008, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home Chapel in Mexia.
Ruby was born on March 27, 1936, in Lewisville, Arkansas and passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2008, in Mexia, Texas.
Ms. Short is survived by her sisters Doris Draper of Cypress, California and Betty Hall of Longview, Texas and her sister-in-law Evelyn Short of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ida Dorsey Short, her brother H.D. Short and her sisters Marion Jaubert and Martha Battistella.
Interment was at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at the Wilson Cemetery of Lewisville, Arkansas.

MARIAN LEA ELDRIDGE
Mrs. Marian Lea Eldridge passed away on Friday, March 28, 2008, at Parkview Regional Hospital of Mexia, Texas, among devoted and caring family and friends.
Mrs. Eldridge was born on September 14, 1910, to H.D. Abner and America Bluitt Abner. She was raised in the Woodland Community, finished the public schools there and attended Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas. She was married to Napoleon Eldridge.
Mrs. Eldridge was a member of the St. John AME Church in Mexia, has been employed by the McGee Nursing Home, worked as a housekeeper and retired from the Mexia State School Foster Grandparent Program.
Funeral services for Mrs. Eldridge were held on Thursday, April 3, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., in the First United Methodist Church, 203 N. Canton, in Mexia, Texas.
Rev. Veliesa Edward, Pastor of St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church in Mexia officiated and Rev. Kennen Jackson, Pastor of Grant Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Palestine was the Eulogist. Interment was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Mexia. The family luncheon was in the St. John Fellowship Hall and viewing was held on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. and visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the family present.
Mrs. Eldridge is survived by her daughters Sandra Eldridge of Mexia, Verna Jean Rose of Plano, and Edwina Eldridge of Dallas; her sons Edwin Eldridge of Mexia and Henry Joel Eldridge of Dallas; 12 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
