Lions end season with loss to Arp Tigers

LION HEAD COACH KEVIN HAYES gives direction to QB DeUntrae Mims during last Friday's Bi-District playoff game against Arp in Corsicana. The Lions fell to the Tigers, 20-0, in a game played in extremely high winds.
- A stiff wind and a solid football team put an end to the Teague Lion's season last Friday night in Bi-District action against the state ranked Arp Tigers at Corsicana High School.

The Lions were defeated by a 20-0 score in a game that was played in a 30-40 mile per hour wind. "Early in the game the wind really hurt," said Lion head coach Kevin Hayes. "We won the flip and thought our best scenario was to go on offense first."

Going into the wind, the Lions started the game on their 20-yard line and their powerful running game was stuffed by the Arp defense, which had nine men on the line of scrimmage to play against the run. The wind took away Teague's play action pass and made their offense one-dimensional.

Facing fourth and three from their own 27, the Lions punted into the strong wind and netted just one yard, giving Arp the ball inside the Lion 30. Arp scored a touchdown and the same exact thing happed on the Lion's second possession - three plays and punt into the wind - giving the ball to Arp inside the Lion 30 yard line. At the end of the first quarter, Arp was leading 14-0 and they managed to hold the Lions in check the rest of the evening. Arp's defense held the Lions to just 88 yards of total offense on the night.

The Lion defense played an outstanding game against Arp, holding them to just 238 yards rushing, 50 of which came late in the game on Arp's final score. "I thought our defense played their best game of the year," said Coach Hayes. "They did a tremendous job against a quality team that could be the eventual state champion."

The Lions ended the season with a 4-7 record after going 1-4 in the preseason and 3-2 in district play. Injuries plagued the Lions much of the season and seven teams on their schedule went to the play-off this year.

"The kids did everything we asked them to do and had a great year," added Hayes. "It's hard to judge by our record, but they did a great job."

Overall this season, the Lions rushed for 3,373 yards, threw for 553 yards and scored 45 touchdowns while averaging 357 yards of offense per game.
Defensively, the Lions gave up 3025 yards, 37 touchdowns and held their opponents to an average of 275 yards of offense per game.
