Awards Presented At VFW's Annual Banquet

Some of the contest winners receiving awards at the VFW's Voice Of Democracy Banquet. Identities noted in story.
VFW Post 5872 and the Ladies Auxiliary held their annual Awards Banquet on Thursday night, January 19, 2012.
Teague made a strong showing in the Voice of Democracy essay contest with Nathanael Havens, a senior at Teague High School, taking a first place award. The theme for the contest was ?Pride in Serving Our Military? and Nathanael's essay and his presentation was outstanding. Amber Lancaster, also a senior at Teague High School, took second place.
Other winners in the Voice of Democracy contest were Brooke Johnson, Morgan Phihoda, Ty Ezell, Lauren Knight and Ryan Knight of Fairfield High School and Katie Looney, Carney Shaffers, Rowan Miller, Anna Jones, Brian Scruggs and Chris Lee of Wortham High School.
The Patriot Pen essay contest winners had a three-way-tie for first place: Lori Massey, Dew Junior High School; Madison Schick, and Abby Knight of Fairfield High School; Claire Partain, second place, and Matthew McCully, third place, also of Fairfield High School.
Teachers awarded ?Teacher of the Year? were Jamie Graham and Robert Shipley from Fairfield High School and Owen Clifton from Wortham High School.
All Freestone County Law Enforcement, Fire Departments, and Emergency Services were recognized. Teague Police Officers recognized were Lt. Mike Noll and Officer Elena Taylor. Teague firefighter recognized was Tammy (Taz) Martin.
Special guest and speaker for the evening was State Commander John Spahr and also in attendance was State Chief of Staff Herry Munn.
Closing remarks were given by Auxiliary President Ginger Taylor, Quartermaster, Don Beene, and Post Commander James Gunter.
A scrumptious dinner was served from Sam's Catering following the blessing given by Post Chaplain Morris Keeton.

Teague firefighter Tammy (Taz) Martin (pictured top center) accepted a plaque from VFW State Commander, John Spahr, for the Teague Volunteer Fire Department for their outstanding job in keeping the citizens of Teague safe.

Patriot Pen Awards (pictured bottom left) are a big part of the ceremony at the Voice of Democracy Awards Banquet held annually at the VFW Post #5872 in Fairfield.
