Four Area Residents Injured In Hwy. 84 Wrecks
1/11/2012
A pair of wrecks last week on Highway 84 in Freestone County injured four area residents.
The first wreck occurred on Tuesday evening, January 3rd at approximately 7 p.m. at the Boyd Curve between Teague and Fairfield. According to DPS reports, Gwendolyn Bonner of Teague was driving westbound on Hwy. 84 in a 2010 Camaro when she started to pass several vehicles in a no passing zone. Bonner reportedly saw an oncoming 18-wheeler cresting a hill in front of her and had to veer to the left shoulder of the road because of the vehicles she was passing on her right.
Reports add that Bonner avoided hitting the 18-wheeler which hit its brakes, causing Robyne Fantroy of Fairfield, who was following the eastbound truck in a 2009 Mitsubishi Galant to veer to the right shoulder where she was hit by Bonner. A third vehicle in the accident, a 2009 Chevy Talon, was driven by Maegan Conner of Teague, who was eastbound behind Fantroy. Reports indicate the impact of the first collision caused Factory's vehicle to spin in a clockwise direction before it was struck by Conner's vehicle.
Bonner and DaKendrick Traylor, who was a passenger in Fantroy's vehicle, were both taken by ambulance to ETMC Fairfield. Reports add that charges for passing in a no passing zone are pending against Bonner. DPS Trooper Michael Adams is investigating the accident.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the second accident, which occurred on Thursday evening, January 5th between Teague and Mexia approximately .2 miles west of FCR 867 at 10:45 p.m.
Reports indicate that a 1988 GMC pick-up truck driven by Aaron McNew of Kirvin was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of Hwy. 84 when it struck a 1997 Geo Prism driven by Kara Robertson of Fairfield. Reports say that Robertson veered to her right as she saw McNew's pick-up coming toward her in her lane. The two vehicles collided partially in the westbound lane and partially in the shoulder of the road, causing McNew's truck to come to rest on its top and ejecting McNew from the vehicle.
Both drivers were care-flighted to Scott and White Hospital in Temple. Investigating the accident is DPS Trooper Curtis Putz.
