Dr. Bill Halbert, his wife Audrey and their family came to Teague in 1958 after earning his medical degree from Baylor University School of Medicine in 1956. He first worked on the staff at the Mexia State School for one year before joining Dr. Cox and Dr. Gage at the Teague Medical Clinic.
His phone number was in the phone book and his patients could reach him day or night for advice. He made countless house calls and delivered many babies. ?I wish I had kept count of all the babies that I delivered,? said Halbert in an earlier interview. ?There were so many and when I go places people will stop me and tell me that I was the one who delivered them.?
He was also active in the Teague community by serving as president of the Teague Chamber of Commerce and Teague City Council. He was a member of the board for Citizens National Bank when it was chartered. He served on the Teague Industrial Foundation board and was an Explorer Scout sponsor. The Halbert family are active members of the First Baptist Church in Teague where Dr. Halbert taught young people?s classes and sang in the adult choir.
Dr. Halbert took care of the people of Teague for 45 years and three months before retiring and was one of the most beloved doctors to ever practice in Teague.
